The officer had a neat black imperial, black moustachios, hot hard coal-black eyes, and the general look of a man it would pay to get along with. The portrait was a stiffly posed job of an officer in full regimentals of about the time of the Mexican war. Above the mantel there was a large oil portrait, and above the portrait two bullet-torn or moth-eaten cavalry pennants crossed in a glass frame. In the middle of the west wall there was a big empty fireplace with a brass screen in four hinged panels, and over the fireplace a marble mantel with cupids at the corners. In fact, I never really attempted a novel until my career as a touring musician was falling apart spectacularly and I needed a new creative outlet. Similarly, when he talks about evolutionary theory, from altruism to mating strategies, he presents little that is new or engaging. In discussing the evolution of music, ties between humans and birds are only loosely limned. However, when Strycker attempts to draw lessons, as his subtitle implies, about what it means to be human, he is far less successful. ![]() ![]() His work is a joy to read when he focuses on the interesting behavior of the birds with which he is obviously enamored, such as the astounding homing skills of pigeons, the uncanny talent of thousands of starlings to dart through the sky collectively without crashing into one another, or the ability of male bowerbirds to use sticks and brightly colored objects to assemble decorative structures that look like works of art. ![]() ![]() Strycker (Among Penguins), associate editor of Birding magazine, gets in his element, writing about his experiences watching penguins in Antarctica, putting out a deer carcass to assess the olfactory capabilities of turkey vultures, and monitoring the nests of purple-crowned fairy-wrens in the Australian outback. ![]() ![]() The first story, “Billions Alone,” feels like it was conceived with a vision of a world under quarantine. In fact, though almost no one could have seen it coming, Venus seems almost eerily timed for release during a pandemic. ![]() Throughout these stories, everyday life becomes a series of looming potential terrors. Another one bites the dust - er, finds their hole - in “The Enigma of Amigara Fault.” Viz The 10 collected short comics - since this is manga, you read each panel from right to left on the page - showcase the pure scope of Ito’s imagination, as well as his ability to envision terrifying phenomena in the most unassuming places. ![]() Now, a new anthology from Viz, Venus in the Blind Spot, collects many of Ito’s best-known short stories, including “Amigara Fault,” and offers a great introduction to Ito’s work. ![]() It’s also an encapsulation of the convergence of Lovecraftian cosmic horror and mundane fear that typifies Ito’s work. If you’ve heard of horror manga creator Junji Ito, it’s probably through the internet fame of his most well-known short story, “The Enigma of Amigara Fault.” That story, about a Japanese town whose inhabitants become obsessed with fitting themselves inside terrifying mysterious human-sized shapes carved into a mountainside - “finding their hole” - has become a horror mainstay as well as a meme since its publication in 2003.
